Despite a slowdown across the beauty and wellness industry in 2023, with overall revenue up just 5%, spa revenue growth surpassed the industry average.

Online gift card sales was the fastest-growing 2023 new revenue channel across the beauty and wellness industry (up 16%), with spas leading the way in transitioning to online sales.  

While the sales growth of spa gift cards was a modest 2.5% in 2023, online gift card revenue saw an impressive leap, surpassing growth in any other beauty and wellness business category.  

Membership-based spas experienced a 33% increase in online gift card revenue, while non-membership spas weren't far behind, with an increase of 17%.

This dramatic rise in online gift card sales highlights spa clients’ clear preference for the convenience and accessibility of digital options.  It also underscores the growing need for spas to innovate and adapt to an increasingly digital marketplace.

The potential value of these new clients is equally significant, with revenue from these Google bookings making up a whopping 40% of all revenue at membership spas, surpassing the overall industry average of 19%.

4. A surge in package sales  

In 2023, package sales revenue at membership spas shot up by an impressive 85%, indicating that this is a growth trend worth paying attention to — especially as retail product sales dropped slightly (down 1%).

Although packages currently represent a small fraction of total spa revenue for membership-focused spas, this 85% increase in 2023 equates to over $20k in sales in each top-performing spa location.
